There are many methods under the umbrella of fertility awareness-based methods, with key differences primarily being which bodily signs you learn to track and what additional information is necessary to identify patterns of fertility and infertility. Some methods incorporate all three bodily signs (cervical mucus, basal body temperature, and cervical position), while others rely solely on cervical mucus and sensations. One of the oldest methods is called the "Billings Method." In the 1970s, Drs. John and Evelyn Billings discovered a connection between cervical mucus and the phase in the menstrual cycle. Together with Prof. Odeblad and Prof. James Brown, they developed a method based solely on sensations in the vulva and cervical mucus. Their guiding principles were to create a relatively simple approach that even non-literate women could apply, with straightforward rules that could be used throughout the fertile years, including challenging periods such as breastfeeding, PCOS and perimenopause. While basal body temperature was already known at the time, the Billings team chose not to include it in their method, honoring their commitment to simplicity—thus enabling even visually impaired women to track their fertility. In my view, there isn’t a single method that suits every phase of our fertile years. For example, during breastfeeding, basal body temperature is often less effective, and the Billings Method works wonderfully. Currently, I am in perimenopause, the transition before menopause, and my cycles are quite long. I find the Billings Method works exceptionally well for me at this stage.
